Class-12 UNIT-4 Physical Education and sports for CWSN-Head Injuries or Brain Disability

      HEAD INJURIES OR                    BRAIN  DISABILTY  a disability in the brain occurs due to a brain injury. the magnitude of the brain injury can range from mild, moderate and severe, there are two types of brain injuries. 1-Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)        2-Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) ABI is not a a hereditary type defect but is the degeneration that occurs after birth.  The causes of such causes of injury are many and are mainly because of external forces applied to the body parts . TBI  result in emotional dysfunctioning and behavioral disturbance.

  Spinal Cord Disability;- Spinal Cord Injury can sometimes lead to lifelong disabilities.This kind of injury mostly occurs due to severe accidents. The injury can be either complete or incomplete. In an incomplete injury, the messages conveyed by the spinal cord are not completely lost. People with such injury may face temporary or permanent inability to perform an activity . Such persons usually do not have any control on their intestinal or urinary activities. Their posture also becomes unstable.

  PHYSICAL DISABILITY Physical disability can be  further categorised as: 1.Musculoskeletal disability 2.Neuromuscular disability Musculoskeletal Disability :- this may be defined as the inability of the bones or muscles to perform the required movements. Such Disability may be characterised as : 1.deformity in any body parts 2.  osteogenesis dystrophy- Improper development of the connective tissue during the growth years makes the bone soft.  As a result, individual develop postural deformity. 3-Muscular dystrophy -due to genetic factor the muscles gradually becomes weak. Neuromuscular Disability;-  It may be define as the inability of a person to perform his /her routine activities because of an illness or disorder of the nervous system. Example of this neuromuscular disability include ;- 1.Cerebral palsy 2.Spine bifida 3.Poliomyelitis 4.Stroke 5.Head injuries 6.Spinal Cord injury

  TYPES OF DISABILITY- There are various types of disability which include various physical and mental impairments that can hamper or reduce a person's ability to carry out his day-to-day activities.  These impairments can be termed as disability of the person to do his or her day to day activities.  Disability can be broken down into a number of broad sub-categories which include the following -- 1-Mobility or Physical Impairment. 2-Sensory Impairment .    a.Spinal Cord Disability    b.Head Injuries or Brain               Disability     CVision Disability     D.Hearing Disability 3.Cognitive or Learning Disability:       a.Psychological Disorders.      b.Affective Disorder      c.Personality Disorders       d.Intellectual Disability

  DISORDER- Disorder may be defined as a disturbance in the normal functioning of an individual.  it is an ailment that disturbs the health and well-being of an individual . it affects a person's mental and physical state ,thereby hampering his /her performance and efficiency.  A disorder may be caused due to biological factor,environmental factor,genetic factor,complication at birth in proper prenatal care etc.  It may be inherited by the children from their parents or occur as a result of an injury or proper development.  In the symptoms of a disorder may seem normal.  However they are clearly visible at a later stage . Disorder is a problem or illness which affects someone 's mind or body . disorder is define as a state of confusion or a mental or physical problem that interrupts normal functions.

  CONCEPT OF DISABILITY-- Disability is an impairment that may be cognitive ,development, intellectual mental ,physical, sensory or some combination of these. According to World Health Organisation-- disability is an umbrella term covering ,impairments activity limitation, and participation restrictions. An impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action ;while a participation restriction is a problem experienced  by an individual in environment in life situations.
